In 1919 a mechanic in a manufacturing plant created the first Electric Toaster, when he got tired of eating burnt toast in the company's cafeteria. His invention shaped the world in a way that was subtle, yet fundamental. Almost every household in the United States owns a toaster. Without it we could live, but our lives would be tougher as a result.
Roll forward to modern times. The information age is 20 years old. We are barraged by technological advances from the moment we wake until the moment we fall asleep. We live in a connected world, from the internet to webcams, cellphones and hi-def TV.
So what does this all have to do with Telephony? Well actually quite a lot. The phone has been around even longer than the toaster, but it has changed the world far more dramatically. We can live without a toaster (probably) but without the phone we'd be in real trouble.
It is my opinion that IP-Telephony is set to revolutionize communication in the same way that the internet revolutionized computers. The continuing integration of our various forms of communication into a cohesive whole means that we will soon be able to use voice, video, email and other media seamlessly to communicate more efficiently than ever. IP-Telephony will be the platform upon which this happens.
In years to come I think that we will look back and wonder how we ever did without IP-Telephony. It is truly revolutionary. . . .
